Mersin International Port to Make a $400 Million Investment

Mersin International Port (MIP) has allocated over $400 million for upcoming expansion projects, including $375 million for the Port Expansion Project and $27 million for the Gate Project.

Mersin International Port (MIP), Turkey's largest port, continues to grow with a $400 million investment. $375 million will be allocated to the Port Expansion Project, and $27 million will go towards the Gate Project. MIP has been growing for the past 15 years, positioning itself as a key gateway to the Eastern Mediterranean.

General Manager Johan Van Daele highlighted MIP's growth despite economic challenges and the pandemic, maintaining uninterrupted service and achieving a 4.4% increase in container operations and 19% in conventional cargo.

• Since 2007, MIP has invested $402 million in operational efficiency and capacity expansion, with total investment exceeding $1.2 billion, securing its position as Turkey's leading port with record-breaking container handling performance.
• In 2021, MIP achieved a record 2.1 million TEU in container operations and 9 million tons in conventional cargo, marking a historic milestone. The port provides direct employment to 3,000 people and indirect employment to 25,000.
• MIP serves 6,200 clients worldwide and is a crucial gateway for Turkey's trade with 190 countries. The port's compound annual growth rate (CAGR) has reached 7.5% since privatization, significantly contributing to the national economy.
• The $375 million Port Expansion Project will increase capacity by 1 million TEU, creating 500 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs, and allowing simultaneous service for two mega vessels, enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness.
• The $27 million Gate Project aims to optimize traffic flow, reducing congestion and integrating road transport more efficiently. It will improve logistics by allowing trucks to enter the port directly via dedicated routes without affecting city traffic.
