Archaeological Excavations Completed at Soli Pompeipolis Ancient Port in Mersin

The first archaeological excavations at Soli Pompeipolis Ancient Port, dating back 1,800 years, have been successfully completed under the supervision of Professor Remzi Yağcı.

Soli Pompeipolis Ancient Port, located in Mersin's Mezitli district, underwent its first archaeological excavations this year, uncovering historical artifacts from the Roman period.

Led by Prof. Dr. Remzi Yağcı, the excavation covered a 70-meter area, revealing six iron ingots believed to date back to the Roman era, likely used in tool and coin production.

  • The excavation team continues documentation and drawing work at the excavation house, emphasizing the port's historical significance in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Roman period.
  • The site is expected to boost tourism potential in the region, connecting the ancient port with the colonnaded street and showcasing its rich industrial past.
  • The excavation efforts were carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mezitli Municipality, Mersin International Port, and Mersin Chamber of Maritime Commerce.
