
Container Throughput at Ports Increased in the First Quarter of This Year
According to the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the amount of cargo handled at ports in the first quarter increased by 7.2%, reaching 134.3 million tons.
In the first quarter of 2024, the volume of cargo handled at Turkish ports rose by 7.2% compared to the same period last year, reaching 134.3 million tons.
Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that container handling saw a record increase of 17.9%, reaching 3.35 million TEU in the first quarter of the year.
- March saw a total of 47.35 million tons of cargo handled at ports, with export-related cargo increasing by 19.4% and import cargo by 12.4%.
- The most handled types of cargo included diesel, iron ore, cement, and feldspar, with petroleum topping import statistics.
- Italy ranked as the top export destination, followed by the US and Spain, while the largest import volume was from Russia.
- Turkish-flagged ships transported 8.1% of foreign trade cargo in March, with an increase of 29.1% compared to the previous year.
- The highest cargo handling occurred at Aliağa Port, followed by Kocaeli and İskenderun, highlighting Turkey's growing significance in global maritime trade.
